The Clarion www.brevard.edu/clarion Volume 77, Issue 16 Web Edition SERVING BREVARD COLLEGE SINCE 1935 Jan. 27, 2012 Dr. Holland says goodbye to Brevard College By Alex McCracken StaffVVritei^^^^_ In case you haven’t heard, our Dean of Students, Chris Holland, is leaving at the end of the month. It’s interesting that we both started at Brevard at the exact same time around 2008 and to be honest. I’m gonna miss the guy. So I wanted to make sure he got the chance to give the last word on his time here, so I sat down with him for an hour and listened to what he had to say. On his first year on the job... My task the first year was really to just listen to what students and faculty and staff had to say and create a strategic plan we could all be proud of. You know, to build a more student centered culture. Things I initially heard, for example, were more of a intention to have outdoor programs, a better connection to intramural activities, and a student center to shoot pool, play darts, whatever. More varied programing. All that became the theme of what I was hearing. We did a lot of focus groups we did a lot of surveying and what we learned was sort of a top ten list of what was on student’s minds. The number one issue was facilities. Even that was varied. Some said they were aging, they need updates and attention badly. The other was about the lack of wireless on campus, there’s not enough infrastructure. For other people the issues were with what we didn’t have, like where’s the student union on campus? Where’s the swimming pool? You know, where are all these things? We grouped that all into one thing. Another issue was student involvement and engagement. A third was the processes the students have to fight, back at that time students literally had to fight to get a parking permit; you had to fill out a form run over and pay it at the finance office, then come back and get it. We needed to do some things quickly; we were not able to address facilities the way people wanted us to There was no budget See 'Chris Holland's Farewell,' page 2 We wish you the best, Dr. Holland. —The Clarion Carolina Andersen Spring blood drive By Olivia Fawcett staff Writer An SOS was sent to the Brevard College students from the American Red Cross on Jan. 26, 2012. The American Red Cross is experiencing a serious decline in the amount of blood being donated throughout this winter. It’s not just in North Carolina, it’s all over the Southeast. Joyce Brendel, and RN with the Red Cross said that “While we know declines in blood donations often occur during the winter months, patients in area hospitals still depend on the everyday support of volunteer donors to receive lifesaving transfusions.” Yet, with the 11 percent decline in donations this January, the Red Cross is having trouble trying to keep themselves afloat. The call for help rings out especially to people with O and B blood types. For those who do not know, blood type O is the universal donor, although it is the most common blood type, it is the only blood type that can be transfused with other blood types. Blood type B is on the lower side of things with only about 2-9% of the world population having this blood type, depending on if it is positive or negative. Blood type B can be donated to both B and AB blood types. “Patients are counting on the blood we collect” said Brendel. “There is no substitute for human blood, and volunteers are the only lifeline for the patients in need of a transfusion.” By donating one pint of blood, three people can be saved. There is a blood drive coming soon and Brevard College has the potential to save hundreds of lives.
